Prep A

This week the children in Prep A began learning about ordinal number. Ordinal number is used to describe the sequence or position of events or objects. To begin developing understanding of ordinal number the children ran running races and were given a place, either 1st, 2nd or 3rd. They received a ‘medal’ with their place in the race.

When talking to your child at home discuss things that you will first, second and third. Give instructions using ordinal numbers: first put on your shirt, second put on your pants, third put on your socks and put your shoes on last. Ask your child to choose the third book on the bookshelf, to get their socks out of the first drawer or find the picture on the third page of their book. Using ordinal number in real life gives your child an understanding of the different ways that ordinal number is used.
